If you've ever been in a class with Uncle Fester, then you know who he is. He has a personality that fills the room and makes a point to introduce himself to everyone at the gym that he hasn't met.

Dan is a consistent presence at the 5AM class with coach Krista. She says "It has been an absolute pleasure to coach Dan and to see him change his life.  Dan has LOST 59 POUNDS since beginning the 5 am class a little more than 6 months ago. The most exciting part for me, has been to see him throughout the process. His demeanor has totally changed you can even see it in the photos.  It is athletes like him that making my job the best job in the entire world!"

When did you first hear about CrossFit and what was your first experience like at CrossFit Montrose/First WOD?

I was actually in law school when I first learned about CrossFit.  Two of my classmates had joined and absolutely LOVED it. They talked about how close they were to their workout mates. They described the intense sense of community fellowships they had developed there and tried desperately at the time to get me to join. I was happy for them… but hesitant. Law school was enough hell for me at that time in my life.  :>)

Skip forward 3 years and another 30lbs and I was feeling at an all time low. My dear friends kept on me to check out a CrossFit gym near me. I finally broke down and went on-line. There I came across all the 5-Star Yelp reviews of a small Gym called “CrossFit Montrose”.

I need to be at court early in the morning so I made a commitment to myself to roll myself out of bed at 4:30am to make the 5:00am class. I hadn’t worked out in DECADES. My first WOD was exactly what I expected it to be… absolute torture!  For 4 days I dreaded not only getting up from the toilet, but simply sitting down on it was an absolute nightmare. But I kept going back; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit Montrose?

The exact thing my friends and former law school classmates spoke of; the sense of community, the dedication of ALL the coaches and especially my 5am coach, Krista Kelly. These people drive me to places I never dreamed my body could go. And as silly and sappy as that sounds, THAT’S what has gotten me now to the point where I actually look forward to my WOD.

What is your favorite post WOD meal?

Ugh… usually I’m not that hungry right after my WOD, but I have incorporated a simple diet of no bread, pasta, pizza, cookies, and cake. That said, after about a half hour, I CRAVE A GREEK YOGURT!

Tell me about your sock game…do you prefer ankle socks, mid, or high socks?

Ankle socks… anything else would just be silly.

What accomplishments are you most proud of (outside or inside of the gym)?

Since starting on August 9, 2016… a day that will live in infamy… I have lost 58 pounds of fat and gained an unknown amount of visible muscle weight. I can now see muscles I didn’t know I had.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?

Burpees… anyone who says anything else is lying to you.

I have to add:  I like anything having to do with weight-lifting, but my FAVORITE movement would be the Russian Kettle Bell Swing. It seems to be the one thing I actually feel I do well at.

It might sound funny but Crossfit has made my life easier, here is why…

I can walk up the 3 flights of stairs inside the San Bernardino Courthouse and not appear to have just finished a 26 mile marathon.

What is one goal you would like to accomplish in the next year?

A chin-up. A simple set of 10 chin-ups would make me feel like I’m 15 years old again... the last time I can remember being able to do a chin-up. (I’m 49yrs old now)
